MicroWorlds EX Robotics Edition for Macintosh OS X (10.3.9 or higher)

There are three “flavours” of version 1.6: the “plain” version 1.6, the version 1.6b21, b22 and b23. Depending on the situation, you may be entitled to a free update of your product. There are no changes to the software besides some very specific fixes. Check if your issue is listed below. These updates are free for registered owners of version 1.6. There is a paid-for upgrade path for other users. The best place to find your current version number is at the top of the ReadMe file, inside the MicroWorlds folder (or in the Documentation folder, inside the MicroWorlds folder). It’s also on your original CD.

Q. My projects sometimes get corrupted, or I get an error message saying that the project “~whatevername” already exists. I work in a computer lab and the students save on a server…

A. Please contact us for the latest update or upgrade (*).

Q. I am using the version 1.3 or 1.4 of MicroWorlds EX Robotics, and it does not run on Mac OS 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6…

A. Please contact us for the latest upgrade. The three latest versions of Mac OS X require the version 1.6 of MicroWorlds EX Robotics. The jump from version 1.3 or 1.4 to 1.6 is not a free update, it is a paid for upgrade.

Q. Sometimes when I make my text boxes transparent, the text becomes illegible…

A. You are probably using a rather old version of MicroWorlds EX Robotics. Please contact us for the latest upgrade.

Q. MicroWorlds EX is not allowing me to save my recording…

A. You are probably using a rather old version of MicroWorlds EX. Please contact us for the latest upgrade.

Q. When I launch MicroWorlds EX Robotics, I get a message saying that RCX won’t run…

A1. If you don’t plan to use the RCX Robotics kit today, just click OK and everything will be fine. You can use MicroWorlds EX as is. It is optimized for your Intel processor.

A2. Lego's RCX driver does not run natively on Intel Macs. However, you can get it to function by performing the following:

* Quit MicroWorlds
* Select the MicroWorlds EX Robotics Edition Application in the Finder
* Choose Get Info from the File menu
* Check the box "Open using Rosetta" in the General section.

This forces the application to run as if it was "not optimized to run on Intel processors" and invokes the Rosetta layer created by Apple to run Power PC applications. You will lose a bit on performance, but you will be allowed to control your RCX Robotics device. Note that you can "undo" and "redo" the setting described above any time and your projects will not be affected. So you can "Open using Rosetta" when doing Robotics, and "run natively" when you are not doing Robotics.

A3. If you would like to remain in “optimized” mode and NOT see this message, start MicroWorlds EX Robotics, choose Preferences in the Apple menu, and choose the Cricket Robotics mode. Restart MicroWorlds EX. It is still running in “optimized” mode, but not being set for RCX, it will not complain about not being able to use RCX.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:

Note that this "Open using Rosetta" setting is done on a "per user" base. In other words, you have to do this setting for each user logged in a given computer, even if you have performed the setting as an Administrator.

Q. Can I use MicroWorlds EX Robotics with the NXT Robotics kit?

A. MicroWorlds EX Robotics for Macintosh does not support the NXT Robotics kit at this point. However, MicroWorlds EX Robotics for Windows does. If you use Parallels or Boot Camp, you can install MicroWorlds EX Robotics for Windows. Connect your NXT brick AFTER Boot Camp or Parallels has started, so it is “acquired” by the PC side of your Mac.

Q. My question isn't answered here. Where else can I find help?

A. If you still need help, click here for ways to contact LCSI. When e-mailing Technical Support, provide as much information as you can, including these:

- Computer Model
- Computer Platform (Mac or Win)
- Mac OS version or Windows version
- MicroWorlds product (EX, EX Robotics or JR)
- MicroWorlds version, as indicated at the top of the ReadMe file in the MicroWorlds folder (it may be inside the Documentation folder, in the MicroWorlds folder)
- Description of problem or steps that lead to the problem
- The exact error message that you are getting
- Can the problem be repeated?

(*) Depending on your current registered version of MicroWorlds, you may be entitled for a free update or you may be required to purchase an Upgrade.
