LEGO RCX ™
Why use MicroWorlds EX Robotics instead of the Robolab software?- With MicroWorlds EX Robotics students can create simulations or interactive presentations that will
trigger an event. For instance, the RCX Microcomputer
sends sensor values, such as readings from temperature sensor to MicroWorlds EX Robotics, where
they can be recorded in a graph.
- MicroWorlds EX Robotics can be used in any area of the curriculum: math, history, science, geography and language arts.
- It's language based, students can talk about what they are doing and what they want to do using a common language.
With MicroWorlds EX Robotics, students write programs and commands on
the computer and then transfer these programs to the programmable LEGO
brick - the RCX. The RCX microcomputer is the heart of the LEGO Mindstorms
for Schools™ system. It receives programs via an infrared computer link
and stores up to five programs at a time. The RCX then runs the program
when activated. Up to three input devices can be connected to the RCX microcomputer to sense
events in its environment, which, in turn, can determine how the student-build Robotics device will react.
What the Mindstorms for Schools™ kit contains
The RCX brick responds to its environment
through a variety of sensors.
- Light Sensor
Detects changes in the level of light (bright or dark).
- Angle Sensor
Measures rotations of a wheel or gear.
- Touch Sensor
An on/off switch inside a LEGO
brick.
- Temperature Sensor
Detects temperatures ranging from -20 to 50 degrees Celsius.
These features make the devices you build turn, rotate,
reverse directions, start and stop, respond to their environment, and execute
other robotic functions controlled by the software.
