Launched in March 1999 by Industry Canada, the SchoolNet Multimedia Learnware and Public Access Applications Program made up to $20M available in the development of new commercial products for learning and public access on-line. Two public competitions invited proposals from firms, organizations and consortia interested in forming production alliances with Industry Canada. The negotiation and implementation of alliances was under the initiative of CANARIE INC., Canada's advanced Internet development organization. With the acceptance of the LCSI's proposal to SchoolNet, LCSI was supported by Industry Canada to produce a collaborative learning tool called Journal Zone. As part of the proposal to SchoolNet, LCSI is offering Journal Zone at a discounted price to all schools within Canada.
