
Meet the Journal Zone Team
Peter Skillen
Lead Designer for Journal Zone
Peter
is a teacher who has spent 15 years in elementary schools and 15
years as a Computers in Education consultant for the Toronto
District School Board, that include over 600 schools. He has
been an outspoken advocate for constructivist approaches to
learning and teaching. This has led to many speaking and
consulting engagements across North America and throughout the
world including MIT, Brazil, St. Petersburg, Czech Republic and
Israel. His presentations are both entertaining and
provocative.
Peter's academic studies in educational psychology and
cognitive science are focused on constructivism, self-directed
learning, and social cognition theory. Journal Zone was
conceived as a result of these investigations.
Peter is currently contracted by LCSI as the Lead Designer of
Journal Zone – an online collaborative journal.
His breadth and depth of expertise include:
- integration of
tool software into the curriculum
- planning for
implementation at the classroom, school and district level
- a focus on
pedagogy, thinking skills, and societal implications
- the
development and promotion of collaborative classroom and
software environments
Peter has pioneered project-based telecommunications through
the introduction of such applications as: FrEdMail, National
Geographic's Kids' Network, GlobalLab, I*EARN, ThinkQuest,
CitySpace, Global SchoolHouse and FirstClass.
In 1994, Peter received the Certificate of Excellence from
the TelEd division of ISTE (International Society for Technology
in Education) for an exemplary telecommunications project that
encouraged and supported cognitive collaboration.
