10th Annual Kids Who
Know and Do
April 25-26, 2002
Bill Graham Center
San Francisco, California
Title: To Question IS the Answer: Learning,
Technology and Standards
Just how powerful is the role of one's own question in learning?
Passion -
the emotional force of a driving question - raises one's
motivation,
increases energy and focus, carries one through uncertainty and
difficulty,
and heightens one's own expectations. Use outliners, idea
processors, and
collaborative communications software to teach and support
students to
formulate and resolve 'driving questions' and to achieve the
expectations.
The differences between 'in school' and 'out of school' learning
are well
documented. In this age of communications the differences have
become more
poignant and more relevant for change in schools. There are
issues of
motivation, control, goal-setting, learning style, multiple
intelligences,
individual versus group learning and relevancy. How can we as
educators make
the two more synchronous while accommodating the curricular
demands and
government standards?
Participants in this session will, through demonstration,
lecture and
discussion:
- learn the qualities of a 'driving question' and its
relationship to
standards
- acquire strategies to help students to generate these
- learn to assist students to use these questions to acquire the
skills,
knowledge and attitudes required
- learn the role of information technologies, scaffolding and
collaboration
A website containing the presentation slides, notes and
resources will be
made available to the participants.
